What we mean by agentic integration
An AI feature generates or interprets information. An agentic system can also use defined tools to take steps toward a goal: search a catalog, update a cart, retrieve an order, or move work through a known process.
The model is only one part of that system. The interface, data, tools, permissions, evaluation, and handoff to a human are what make the feature dependable enough to use.
Start with the job
A sensible engagement starts by naming the task, the person doing it today, and what a successful result looks like. Only then is it useful to discuss models or agents.

- Prototype the smallest useful version
- Test expected behavior and failure cases
- Design the interface and human handoff
- Measure whether the feature does the job
Agentic commerce
Commerce is becoming accessible to AI assistants through structured product catalogs and tools such as Shopify's Storefront MCP. Those systems can support natural-language product discovery, store-policy questions, cart actions, checkout handoff, and order support.
Being technically connectable is not the same as being understandable. Product information, variants, policies, editorial context, and brand rules still need to be accurate and structured. The robots also require merchandising.
Where ordinary automation wins
Not every workflow needs a language model. If the inputs are predictable and the rules are stable, conventional software is usually cheaper, faster, and easier to test.
AI earns its place when language, judgment, or flexible tool use is genuinely part of the task. Restraint is included at no additional charge.
